It’s been literally almost 4 years since they released Logic 7, and other applications have leapfrogged it in ease of use and interface innovation (Live, Tracktion, Reason) or feature-completeness (Cubase, ProTools) and stability—apparently Logic 5.5 on Windows ran great, with much lower latency via ASIO than we’re getting today with CoreAudio.
It’s a literally 20-year-old app that started on the Atari ST and its age is starting to show. I fear that for all its power, new users are not going to want to put up with its idiosyncrasies and learning curve (and the Environment), and are starting to move to using competing apps.
I’m all for whatever works best for me, but seeing the innovation Apple’s put into its other apps, I’m rather hoping for a Logic 8 that blows the competition away.
I’ve tried Soundtrack Pro in Final Cut and there’s something about it that suggests a way forward for Logic. Conforming to the Pro UI would be one thing…simplifying the UI while finding a way to keep all the power of Logic 7 intact is the holy grail.
